Frequently Asked Questions

Here you'll find some key topics related to your journey to Southern Africa.

Malaria:

Northern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, and the northern regions of South Africa are malaria areas. Prophylaxis is recommended, especially during the rainy season when the risk is higher. The best protection during your adventures is to use mosquito repellent in the evenings and at night, and to wear long-sleeved clothing.

Border Crossings:

On some journeys, you’ll cross national borders. In general, border crossings are not a problem – the countries are welcoming to tourists and aim to make the process as smooth as possible.

National Parks:

In all national parks across Southern Africa, self-driving is possible. Most parks have fenced campsites equipped with basic facilities. In Botswana, however, the campsites are unfenced and the amenities are more basic. Since the water for the showers is heated using solar power, the best time for a warm shower is in the afternoon.

Vehicle:

The rental agency will provide you with all necessary contact information in case something unexpected happens – such as a breakdown or equipment issue.

The vehicles depend on the selected package:

  • COMFORT: In Namibia and Botswana, you’ll receive a 4×4 double-cab pickup; in South Africa, an SUV.

  • COMFORT AND CAMPING: You’ll receive a fully equipped 4×4 camping vehicle (double or single cab).

  • CAMPING: The same vehicle as in the “Comfort and Camping” package.

Catering:

Supermarkets are generally well-stocked and easily accessible throughout the region. However, if you're heading into the national parks in Botswana, you should plan ahead for several days – there are no shopping facilities at the campsites, and the villages between parks may not have reliable supplies. In Zimbabwe as well, it’s not guaranteed that you'll find everything you need, so it’s best to plan your food supplies in advance.

Visa:

For most countries, you can obtain your entry visa directly at the border — no prior application is necessary. For Zimbabwe, the visa can be purchased at the border for a fee. In all other countries, the entry visa is free of charge.
Visas are valid for up to 90 days per year, except for Zimbabwe, where the visa is valid for 30 days.
