Detailed Itineraries for the Northern Cape – 7 Days

Day 1: Upington
After your arrival in the small town of Upington, you’ll pick up your vehicle and have time to relax and get familiar with the car.
Day 2: Witsand Nature Reserve (200 km – approx. 2.5 hrs)
A relaxed morning – perhaps some last-minute shopping – before you set off for the white sand dunes of Witsand (“Witsand” means “white sand” in Afrikaans). Upon arrival, you can test your 4x4 skills on the marked trails, join a guided nature walk, or try sandboarding – the African version of snowboarding. Tonight, you’ll spend your first night under the African stars. With a bit of luck, you might spot fluorescent scorpions glowing under UV light. And if it cools down at night, listen for the “roaring” of the dunes – a fascinating natural phenomenon.
Day 3: Kuruman (180 km – approx. 2 hrs)
After breakfast, continue to the small town of Kuruman. Along the way, you’ll pass some of South Africa’s largest iron ore mines. Once there, it’s worth visiting the “Kuruman Eye” – a natural spring that forms an oasis in the green Kalahari. According to legend, it is connected to many other waterholes in southern Africa by a deep underground water system.
Day 4 & 5: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (380 km – approx. 4.5 hrs)
You’ll spend the next two days in one of southern Africa’s transboundary national parks – the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, it is known for its diverse wildlife. The red dunes of the Kalahari create a unique atmosphere. You can join guided night drives or take a walking safari to learn more about the fascinating small creatures of the desert.
Day 6: Augrabies National Park (380 km – approx. 4.5 hrs)
Today you say goodbye to the Kalahari and drive to Augrabies National Park. After arriving, you can relax by the pool and visit the impressive Augrabies Falls in the afternoon.
Day 7: Upington (120 km – approx. 2 hrs)
A short drive brings you back to Upington, where you return your vehicle and continue your onward journey.
