Day-by-day itinerary with accommodations and highlights:
Day 1: Arrival (Johannesburg & Pretoria, South Africa)
Meeting point: Intercontinental Hotel at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Kempton Park, Johannesburg (directly opposite the international arrivals hall).
Logistics: Meeting at 11 AM, handover of the 4×4 vehicles with a detailed briefing.
Goal: Pretoria, South Africa's administrative capital.
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Pretoria.
Day 2: Kruger National Park (South Africa)
Travel: Early departure to the world-famous Kruger National Park, stopover for shopping.
Activities: First game drive upon entering the park.
Accommodation: 1st night in rooftop tents in the Kruger National Park.
Day 3: Limpopo Transfrontier Park (Mozambique)
Travel: Early morning border crossing into Mozambique.
Activities: Drive through impressive landscapes; the Shingwedzi Cliffs Trail is a 4×4 eco-trail with varying difficulty levels.
Accommodation: 4×4 camp in the park – possibly basic facilities.
Day 4 & 5: Gonarezhou National Park (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Continue to the Mozambique/Zimbabwe border (possible crossing of the Limpopo River).
Activities: Visit the Chilojo Cliffs, drive along the Runde River, lunch with a view.
Accommodation: Two nights at scenic campsites.
Day 6: Ruins of Great Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe)
Journey: Continue to the ruins of Great Zimbabwe (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Activities: Afternoon guided tour through the ruins.
Accommodation: Camping.
Day 7: Lions Den (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Drive through Harare with stopovers for shopping.
Accommodation: Camping.
Day 8 & 9: Mana Pools National Park (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Drive over the Zambezi Highlands – steep, challenging 4×4 route.
Activities: Game drives and walking safaris, known for close encounters with wildlife.
Accommodation: Two nights in a tent camp directly on the Zambezi River – often visited by elephants and hyenas!
Day 10: Lake Kariba (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Game drive upon departure, then drive to Lake Kariba.
Activities: Afternoon preparation for the ferry.
Accommodation: Camping right on the lakeshore.
Day 11: Kariba Ferry (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Short drive to the port, loading the vehicles.
Activities: 22-hour crossing on the Kariba Ferry (e.g., MV Sea Lion), including meals and wildlife viewing.
Accommodation: Overnight under the open sky on the ferry – an unforgettable experience.
Day 12 & 13: Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Arrival at the opposite shore, drive to Victoria Falls.
Activities: Day 13 at leisure – visit to Victoria Falls (one of the 7 natural wonders of the world).
Note: Best views from the Zimbabwean side, current entrance fee USD 50 (international guests). Numerous optional activities available.
Accommodation: Bed & Breakfast in Victoria Falls – a welcome change from camping.
Day 14 & 15: Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Short drive to Hwange National Park.
Activities: Two days of game drives in one of Africa's best wildlife reserves.
Accommodation: Camping.
Day 16 & 17: Matopos National Park (Zimbabwe)
Travel: Drive through Hwange, stopover for shopping in Bulawayo.
Destination: Matopos National Park, overnight stay at the park's edge.
Activities (Day 17): Full-day guided safari with village visit, historical sites (e.g., Cecil Rhodes’ grave), and possible rhino walk.
Accommodation: Camping.
Day 18: Mapungubwe National Park (South Africa)
Travel: Return to South Africa, border formalities.
Destination: Mapungubwe National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Highlights: Photo opportunity at the tripoint of South Africa–Botswana–Zimbabwe.
Accommodation: Cottages in the park.
Day 19: Johannesburg (South Africa)
Travel: Return to Johannesburg.
