Detailed itineraries for the West Coast – 8 days
Day 1: Cape Town
Upon your arrival in Cape Town, you will collect your rental vehicle and drive to your accommodation for the first night. In the afternoon, take the opportunity to explore the famous V&A Waterfront, visit some historical landmarks, or simply relax on the beach.
Day 2: Cape Town
Today you’ll explore the Cape Peninsula, with highlights including Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders National Park with its penguins, and much more. In the evening, enjoy a sunset dinner overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 3: Paternoster (150 km / 2 h)
After breakfast, leave the “Mother City” and head towards Paternoster. A coffee stop at Bloubergstrand is worthwhile along the way, offering fantastic views of Table Mountain. From here, you can also see Robben Island, the famous prison island of Nelson Mandela. Around midday, you’ll arrive in Paternoster, where you can watch the colourful fishing boats returning from their morning catch.
Day 4: Lambert’s Bay (130 km / 2 h)
Continue along the coast to the small village of Lambert’s Bay – perfect for enjoying freshly caught fish right on the beach. In the afternoon, consider visiting Bird Island Nature Reserve, where you can observe the Cape gannet colony and the third largest penguin colony in South Africa. For the adventurous, whale watching tours depart daily from the harbour.
Day 5: Sutherland (340 km / 4.5 h)
Today you’ll leave the coast and drive inland. You’ll pass the town of Clanwilliam and travel through the Cederberg mountains with breathtaking views, before reaching the Great Karoo – South Africa’s semi-desert region. In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Sutherland, a charming town with historic buildings. It is also home to the South African Astronomical Observatory, which offers guided tours where you can marvel at the stars and planets in the clear night sky.
Days 6 and 7: Stellenbosch (300 km / 4 h)
Today, you’ll make your way back towards the coast. You'll pass the historic Matjiesfontein railway station and drive through South Africa’s longest tunnel. Around midday, you’ll reach Stellenbosch, where you'll have two days to explore the country’s famous wine region and visit various wine estates.
Day 8: Cape Town (50 km / 1 h)
After a relaxing morning, drive back to Cape Town, return your vehicle, and prepare for your journey home.
